Abstract

The following paper traces the political and ideological impacts on Alpinism between 1900 and 1945. For this, it not only scrutinises the increase in radical attitudes – and in particular the notion of „Deutschtum“ – in Austrian alpine clubs. It also deconstructs the idealisation of mountains and alpine life in movies of the time as well as their instrumentalisation by the National Socialists.
