Abstract

The following seminar-paper is about the relation between the building of roads in the alps during the first half of the twentieth century and tourism. It will be shown that this two roads have only been built to vitalize the upper class tourism in the alps. By using local infrastructure and hotels as indicators it will be proven, that the motivation of the most tourists who came into the alps was the pure existence of this two roads and the beauty of the surrounding landscape but not for climbing on mountains. While alpine highways and roads of the present are used to achieve a touristic attraction, alpine roads of the early twentieth century have been touristic attractions themselves.
